On April 1, 2025, Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu Farnós, Apostolic Commissioner for the Liquidation of the Marian Community of Reconciliation (MCR), requested from the Superior General, Luciane Vieira Urban, accompanied by the Bursar General, Florencia Silva Cabrera, the execution of the decree of suppression of this Society of Apostolic Life of diocesan right.
The aforementioned decree was signed on January 14, 2025, by Sister Simona Brambilla, Prefect of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, and approved on the same day in forma specifica by Pope Francis.
The suppression of the Community, along with the other three institutes founded by the layman Luis Fernando Figari Rodrigo, is motivated, as specified in the decree, by the lack of charism of divine origin in the Founder, as well as by the abuses and improper and abusive behavior of Figari and many of his collaborators. Although each of these institutes has had its own journey, taken into account in the act of suppression, the Community itself, which has been on a process of renewal since 2011, recognizes that it was not exempt from psychological abuses and abuses of conscience.
In a previous statement, dated February 4, 2025, the Fraternas already expressed “our compassion and solidarity with the pain of all the people who have been affected over the years by the sectarian system and the abusive practices that were reproduced within our community; we offer our willingness to cooperate, as directed, with the process of reparation and justice for all victims, and we commit to remembering them in our prayers”.
The Fraternas, despite the pain caused by the decision of the suppression, have welcomed it with docility and in filial obedience, while also expressing their availability and disposition to collaborate in everything related with the process of suppression and liquidation of assets.
In the two meetings held in Lima in February of 2025, Monsignor Bertomeu assured that said suppression does not prevent the consecrated women who belonged to the Marian Community of Reconciliation from continuing their life of dedication to the Lord in the different forms foreseen by canon law, either as individuals or in an associated manner.
On the other hand, in a letter addressed to the former Fraternas, he told them that “the Church values infinitely the consecration of each one of you and wishes to safeguard it in the best possible way”.
He also reminded them that “the Holy See, through my service, which is intimately linked to your acceptance of it, is ready to assist and accompany each one of you to begin a new experience that will gather all the good that has taken place in these years, purifying and modifying what is necessary”.
In this letter, he has also informed that he has appointed Luciane Urban as his Assistant Delegate for the personal accompaniment of the sisters, and Florencia Silva as Assistant Delegate for administrative matters and for the transition of their projects, as long as they are willing to do so. For this reason, he expressed his gratitude to them and asked the former Fraternas to keep them in their prayers.
Finally, Monsignor Bertomeu expressed: “I offer you my prayers, so that the Lord may enlighten and strengthen you on the path you undertake, and I ask you to pray for me, so that I may carry out this assignment with charity and justice”.
