What is vocational discernment?

To discern is to embark on the adventure of discovering what God has in store for your life. Discernment is a period of listening and being open to discovering your vocation in the light of faith. This implies being able to recognize the voice of the Beloved, hearing it, interpreting it and deciding what answer to give to that call.

Vocational discernment is a process that develops over time. It requires human and spiritual maturity, as well as discovering the specifics regarding where and how to live the call. It is important that you have a spiritual guide who can help you to discern what God is placing in your heart. It is also necessary to get to know the community to which you feel called so as to see if you can see yourself living the way of life and think about if you could live a full and happy life there. It is also important for both you and the community to confirm your experience of communion in the spirit.

“For each person, the vocation to love takes concrete form in everyday life through a series of choices, which find expression in the states of life (marriage, ordained ministry, consecrated life, etc.), …. The purpose of vocational discernment is to find out how to transform them, in the light of faith, into steps towards the fullness of joy to which everyone is called.” (Preparatory Document for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, 13 January 2017)
